Significance
The Battle of Gesher on May 14, 1948 represented a joint Iraqi-Jordanian effort to exploit the opening hours of Israeli statehood by advancing through the Jordan Valley toward Afula, where a link-up with the First Yarmouk Brigade of the Arab Liberation Army was intended. The failure to break through constituted a tactical Israeli victory that disrupted this operational design. Following the repulse, Iraqi forces redirected south toward Nablus and Jenin to assume responsibility for the Samarian Front, effectively abandoning the drive to Afula. The halting of that advance prevented the intended junction between the Iraqi-Jordanian column and the Arab Liberation Army, foreclosing a coordinated northern axis of pressure against Israeli forces in the early critical days of the war.
Tactics
Arab forces opened the battle by storming the Jewish exclave of Naharayim, using it as an entry point for the attempted advance toward Afula.
