Significance
The Battle of Nirim was fought on May 15, 1948, the opening day of the Egyptian invasion of Israel in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The engagement at kibbutz Nirim, one of the settlements established as part of the strategic 'eleven points in the Negev' push, represented an early test of Egyptian offensive capacity against the Haganah's ability to hold dispersed rural positions. The Egyptian 6th Battalion, supported by armored vehicles, mortars, cannons, and aircraft, was repulsed by approximately 40 defenders after roughly seven hours of fighting and withdrew with an estimated 30–35 dead. The failure to take Nirim on the first day of the invasion demonstrated that Egyptian forces, despite their material advantages, could not rapidly overrun prepared Haganah positions in the Negev, which had implications for the pace and ambition of the Egyptian advance into Israeli-held territory during the opening phase of the war.
