Operation Tempest

Significance

Operation Tempest (Operacja Burza) was a coordinated series of armed uprisings launched by the Polish Home Army against German occupation forces across Polish territory. As the dominant force of the Polish resistance, the Home Army sought to assert Polish sovereignty and establish administrative control ahead of advancing Allied and Soviet forces. The operation was shaped by competing political objectives: demonstrating the authority of the Polish Underground State before the Soviets could impose their own order on liberated territory. The commanders on the German side, including Hans Frank and Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski, oversaw the occupation apparatus the uprisings were directed against, while Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski and Leopold Okulicki led the Polish effort. The outcome of the operation is not recorded in a single result, reflecting its character as a dispersed, multi-front campaign rather than a decisive engagement, and its significance within World War II lies as much in its political dimension as in its military one.
