Overview

Operation Paravane was a British air raid of World War II that inflicted heavy damage on the German battleship Tirpitz, at anchor in Kaafjord in the far north of German-occupied Norway. The attack was conducted on 15 September 1944 by 21 Royal Air Force heavy bombers, which flew from an airfield in the north of the Soviet Union. The battleship was struck by one bomb, and further damaged by several near misses. This damage rendered Tirpitz unfit for combat, and she could not be repaired as it was no longer possible for the Germans to sail her to a major port.

Significance

Operation Paravane removed the Tirpitz as an operational threat to Allied naval operations in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Struck by one bomb and damaged by near misses during the 15 September 1944 raid, the battleship was rendered unfit for combat. Critically, the Germans could no longer sail her to a major port for repairs, making the damage permanent in practical terms. Throughout the war, the mere presence of Tirpitz in Norwegian waters had tied down significant British naval forces and constrained convoy routing to the Soviet Union. Paravane effectively ended that strategic constraint without a surface engagement, achieving through air power what the Royal Navy had repeatedly attempted by other means.

Twenty-one Royal Air Force heavy bombers flew from an airfield in the north of the Soviet Union to strike the Tirpitz at anchor in Kaafjord, in the far north of German- Norway. The use of a Soviet staging base extended the bombers' effective range to reach the fjord anchorage. The attack delivered at least one direct bomb hit on the stationary battleship, with additional near misses contributing to the damage.
