Significance
Operation München was the Romanian codename for the joint German-Romanian offensive launched in July 1941 to retake Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina, and the Hertsa region, territories Romania had ceded to the Soviet Union in 1940. Concluded successfully after 24 days of fighting, the operation restored Romanian administrative control over these contested areas within weeks of Germany's broader invasion of the Soviet Union. The campaign positioned Romania as an active co-belligerent rather than a peripheral partner, committing over 325,000 Romanian troops alongside German forces. The recapture of Bessarabia carried significant political weight for the Antonescu government, framing participation in the wider Eastern Front war as national recovery rather than foreign conquest. The operation was followed by a genocide against the Jewish population of Bessarabia, making it a significant juncture in the wartime persecution of Jews in Romanian-controlled territory.
Tactics
The operation employed three parallel axes: the Romanian Third Army advanced in the north, the German Eleventh Army with subordinated Romanian units operated in the center, and the Romanian Fourth Army pushed in the south. The overview does not describe specific maneuvers, terrain use, or engagement-level dispositions beyond this broad formation structure.
