Significance
Operation Kutuzov was the northern counteroffensive arm of the Kursk Strategic Offensive Operation, launched by the Red Army against Army Group Center in the Central Russian Upland on 12 July 1943. Timed as a direct counter to Operation Citadel, it placed German forces on the defensive at a moment when they were already committed to their own offensive at Kursk. The operation concluded on 18 August 1943 with the capture of Orel and the collapse of the Orel bulge, eliminating a significant German salient and foreclosing any immediate prospect of renewed German offensive action in the central sector of the Eastern Front. Soviet forces numbered approximately 800,000 against a German strength of roughly 300,700; German casualties reached over 86,000 while Soviet losses were substantially higher at nearly 430,000, reflecting the scale and intensity of the fighting. The operation is named after General Mikhail Kutuzov, the commander associated with repelling Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, a deliberate invocation of Russian military heritage intended to frame the counteroffensive within a tradition of national defense.
