Operation Danny

Overview

Operation Dani, also spelled Danny, was an Israeli military offensive launched on July 9–19, 1948 at the end of the first truce of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The objectives were to capture territory east of Tel Aviv and then to push inland and relieve the Jewish population and forces in Jerusalem. The main forces fighting against the IDF were the Arab Legion and Palestinian irregulars

Significance

Operation Danny was a major Israeli offensive launched at the close of the first truce of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, aimed at securing territory east of Tel Aviv and opening a corridor to relieve besieged Jewish population and forces in Jerusalem. The operation placed Yigal Alon and Yitzhak Rabin in command of Israeli forces numbering around 6,000 against the Arab Legion, commanded by Glubb Pasha, and Palestinian irregulars. Israeli casualties stood at 179 against 295 on the Transjordanian side. By targeting the axis between the coastal plain and Jerusalem, the operation was directly tied to one of the war's central strategic problems: the isolation of Jerusalem and the need to secure a viable land route to it.
