Operation Carthage

Significance

Operation Carthage on 21 March 1945 was a British air raid targeting the Shellhus, the Gestapo headquarters in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The Danish Resistance had repeatedly requested the strike, as the building housed intelligence dossiers and served as a site for interrogating and torturing Danish citizens. The raid destroyed the Shellhus, freed 18 prisoners, and disrupted Nazi anti-resistance operations in Denmark. A comparable raid against the Gestapo headquarters in Aarhus had been carried out on 31 October 1944. However, part of the Copenhagen raid was mistakenly directed against a nearby school, resulting in 123 civilian deaths and significant collateral damage — an outcome that underscored the operational limits of precision strikes in dense urban settings. The raid's mixed legacy, military disruption alongside substantial civilian loss, has remained a subject of historical and cultural attention, including dramatization in the 2021 Danish film The Shadow in My Eye.
