Significance

The Battle of Halbe, fought from April 24 to May 1, 1945, resulted in the destruction of the German Ninth Army as a fighting force. Commanded by General Theodor Busse, the Ninth Army was encircled and overwhelmed by Soviet forces under Georgy Zhukov and Ivan Konev during the broader Battle of Berlin. With a German force of approximately 80,000 facing roughly 280,000 Soviet troops, the scale of the defeat was decisive: German casualties reached approximately 30,000, and the army ceased to function as a coherent military unit. The elimination of the Ninth Army removed one of the last significant German formations capable of influencing the defense of Berlin or conducting a withdrawal to the west, accelerating the final collapse of organized German resistance in the central European theater in the closing days of the war.
