Operation Bagration

Overview

Operation Bagration was the codename for the 1944 Soviet Byelorussian strategic offensive operation, a military campaign fought between 22 June and 19 August 1944 in Soviet Byelorussia in the Eastern Front of World War II, just over two weeks after the start of Operation Overlord in the west. It was during this operation that Nazi Germany was forced to fight simultaneously on two major fronts for the first time since the war began. The Soviet Union destroyed 28 of the divisions of Army Group Centre and completely shattered the German front line. The overall engagement is the largest defeat in German military history, with around 450,000 German casualties, while setting the stage for the subsequent isolation of 300,000 German soldiers in the Courland Pocket.

Significance

Operation Bagration, conducted between 22 June and 19 August 1944, was the Soviet Byelorussian strategic offensive that inflicted the largest defeat in German military history. The Soviet Union, fielding over 1.6 million troops against a German force of roughly 486,000, destroyed 28 divisions of Army Group Centre and shattered the German front line in Byelorussia. German casualties reached approximately 300,000–375,000, and the operation set the conditions for the subsequent isolation of around 300,000 additional German soldiers in the Courland Pocket. Launched just over two weeks after Operation Overlord began in the west, Bagration forced Nazi Germany to contend simultaneously with two major fronts for the first time in the war. This two-front pressure fundamentally constrained Germany's ability to stabilize either theater, accelerating the deterioration of its strategic position on the Eastern Front and hastening the broader collapse of German military capacity in the second half of 1944.
