Olenivka prison explosion

Significance

The Olenivka prison explosion on 29 July 2022 resulted in the deaths of 53 to 62 Ukrainian prisoners of war and left 75 to 130 wounded in a Russian-operated facility near Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast. The victims were predominantly Azov regiment soldiers captured during the siege of Mariupol, where Azovstal had been the last Ukrainian holdout. Russia shelled the building housing these POWs in what the overview characterizes as a false flag operation, making the incident notable not only for the scale of prisoner casualties but for its alleged deliberate character. The attack drew international attention to the treatment of Ukrainian POWs under Russian custody and raised questions about accountability under the laws of armed conflict, adding a significant legal and diplomatic dimension to the broader Russo-Ukrainian war.
