Battle of Brovary

Overview

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a military engagement took place at Brovary, an eastern suburb of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. Russian forces advanced west from southern Chernihiv Oblast and were engaged by Ukrainian forces. Russian forces withdrew from the area by 1-2 April 2022.

Significance

The engagement at Brovary formed part of the broader Russian effort to encircle or threaten Kyiv during the opening weeks of the full-scale invasion. Russian forces advanced westward from southern Chernihiv Oblast toward this eastern suburb of the capital before being engaged by Ukrainian defenders under Roman Darmohrai. The Russian withdrawal from the area by early April 2022 was part of the wider Russian pullback from the Kyiv axis, which marked the effective end of the initial push to seize or pressure the Ukrainian capital.
