Significance

During the Russo-Georgian War, Russian forces occupied the Georgian city of Gori for nine days beginning on 13 August 2008, withdrawing on 22 August. The occupation of Gori, a strategically positioned city on the main east-west highway through Georgia, extended Russian military presence well beyond the South Ossetian conflict zone and into Georgian territory proper. The withdrawal from Gori did not mark a full Russian military disengagement from Georgia; Russian forces continued to occupy other parts of the country for years afterward, a pattern that shaped the broader unresolved territorial situation following the war.
