Battle of the Kodori Valley

Overview

The Battle of the Kodori Valley was a military operation during the Russo-Georgian War in the Upper Kodori Valley of Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. It was the only part of Abkhazia under Georgian control before this military conflict. On 9 August 2008, the Abkhaz military, with support by Russian forces, launched an operation to remove the remaining Georgian troops from the disputed gorge. After three days, the Georgian military withdrew from the Upper Kodori Valley.

Significance

The Battle of the Kodori Valley eliminated the last area of Abkhazia under Georgian government control. Prior to the Russo-Georgian War, the Upper Kodori Valley represented Georgia's sole remaining foothold in the breakaway region. The Abkhaz operation, conducted with Russian support, resulted in Georgian withdrawal after three days of fighting, effectively completing Abkhaz and Russian control over the entire territory. Coming alongside the main front in South Ossetia, the loss of Kodori foreclosed any Georgian leverage over Abkhazia's political status and consolidated the territorial gains that followed the broader August 2008 conflict.
