New York and New Jersey Campaign

LOADING MAP TELEMETRY…

Overview

The New York and New Jersey campaign in 1776 and the winter months of 1777 was a series of American Revolutionary War battles for control of the Port of New York and the state of New Jersey, fought between British forces under General Sir William Howe and the Continental Army under General George Washington. Howe was successful in driving Washington out of New York, but overextended his reach into New Jersey, and ended the New York and New Jersey campaign in January 1777 with only a few outposts near New York City under British control. The British held New York Harbor for the rest of the Revolutionary War, using it as a base for expeditions against other targets.

Significance

The New York and New Jersey campaign of 1776–1777 contested control of the Port of New York between General William Howe's British forces and George Washington's Continental Army. Howe succeeded in driving Washington out of New York, securing New York Harbor — a strategic asset the British would hold for the remainder of the Revolutionary War and use as a base for subsequent expeditions against other targets. However, Howe overextended his advance into New Jersey, and by January 1777 British control in that state had contracted to a handful of outposts near New York City. That contraction preserved Continental Army cohesion and left Washington's force capable of continued resistance, limiting the strategic return of Britain's early operational success. The campaign thus produced a divided outcome: durable British control of a major port and logistical hub, offset by failure to consolidate New Jersey and destroy the Continental Army as a fighting force.
