Battle of Pell's Point

Significance

The Battle of Pell's Point, fought during the New York and New Jersey campaign of the American Revolutionary War, was a day-long engagement between American forces under John Glover and a British and Hessian force of approximately 4,000 troops commanded by William Howe and Henry Clinton. The action took place across the Manor of Pelham in what is now Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx and extending into present-day Westchester County. British and Hessian casualties reached approximately 1,000. The engagement is recorded under several names in American, British, and Hessian sources — Battle of Pelham, Battle of Pelham Manor, Battle of Pell's Neck, and Battle of Rodman's Neck among them — reflecting the geographic breadth of the fighting and the differing vantage points of the armies involved. As part of the broader New York and New Jersey campaign, the battle represented one of the contested actions that shaped British efforts to maneuver through the region following the fall of New York.
