Battle of Valcour Island

Significance

The Battle of Valcour Island, fought on Lake Champlain on October 11, 1776, was one of the first naval engagements of the American Revolutionary War and among the earliest actions of the Continental Navy. Benedict Arnold's fleet, though largely captured or destroyed by the British force under General Guy Carleton, succeeded in stalling British plans to advance to the upper Hudson River valley. By delaying that push, the American defense of Lake Champlain denied the British a potentially decisive campaign objective in 1776, buying time for Continental forces at a critical stage of the war.
