Significance

The Mongol conquest of the Song dynasty was the final phase of the Mongol conquest of China, completing a campaign that had begun under Ögedei Khan and concluded under Kublai Khan. The conquest is characterized as the last great military achievement of the Mongol Empire, marking the point at which Mongol expansion across China reached its territorial conclusion. The Yuan dynasty it produced represented a fundamental transformation in the governance of China, integrating the former Song territories into a Mongol imperial structure that spanned the continent.
