First Battle of Wissembourg

Overview

In the First Battle of Wissembourg an Allied army commanded by Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser attacked the French Army of the Rhine under Jean Pascal Carlenc. After an ineffectual resistance, the French army abandoned its fortified line behind the Lauter River and retreated toward Strasbourg in confusion. This engagement of the War of the First Coalition occurred on the eastern border of France about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Strasbourg.

Significance

The First Battle of Wissembourg resulted in the collapse of the French Army of the Rhine's defensive position along the Lauter River. Despite holding numerical superiority with over 51,000 troops against Wurmser's force of roughly 42,000, the French under Carlenc offered only ineffectual resistance before abandoning their fortified line and retreating in disorder toward Strasbourg. The loss of this position on the eastern border of France opened the approaches toward Strasbourg, a strategically significant city approximately 60 kilometres to the south, and demonstrated the fragility of French frontier defenses in the early phase of the War of the First Coalition. French casualties of 3,000 against Habsburg losses of 1,800 reflected the disorganized nature of the withdrawal.
