Battle of Famars

Overview

The Battle of Famars was fought on 23 May 1793 during the Flanders Campaign of the War of the First Coalition. An Allied Austrian, Hanoverian, and British army under Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld defeated the French Army of the North led by François Joseph Drouot de Lamarche. The battle occurred near the village of Famars in northern France, five km south of Valenciennes.

Significance

The Battle of Famars on 23 May 1793 formed part of the Flanders Campaign of the War of the First Coalition. A Coalition force of roughly 53,000 Austrian, Hanoverian, and British troops under Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld defeated the French Army of the North under François Lamarche, who fielded approximately 27,000 men. French casualties of around 3,000 against Coalition losses of roughly 1,100 indicate a pronounced tactical reverse for the Republic. The action took place near the village of Famars, five kilometres south of Valenciennes, placing the Coalition in a strong position to press operations against that fortress town and sustain their advance into northern France during the opening phase of the campaign.
