First Battle of Kharkov

Overview

The First Battle of Kharkov was a battle that took place from 20 to 24 October 1941 for control of the city of Kharkov, located in the Ukrainian SSR, during the final stage of Operation Barbarossa. The battle was fought between the German 6th Army, part of Army Group South, and the Soviet Southwestern Front. The Soviet 38th Army was tasked with defending the city while its factories were dismantled and moved to a more easterly location.

Significance

The First Battle of Kharkov was fought in late October 1941 during the final stage of Operation Barbarossa, as German forces of the 6th Army, part of Army Group South, pressed into the Ukrainian SSR. The engagement pitted the 6th Army against the Soviet Southwestern Front, with the Soviet 38th Army holding a defensive mission that was as much logistical as military: its primary task was to protect the dismantling and eastward relocation of Kharkov's industrial facilities. Soviet casualties reached over 96,000, reflecting the scale of pressure the Southwestern Front was under at this stage of the German advance. The fall of Kharkov represented a significant territorial and industrial loss for the Soviet Union, though the managed evacuation of factory equipment partially offset the strategic damage by preserving production capacity further east.
