First Battle of Cholet

Overview

The First Battle of Cholet took place during the War in the Vendée on 15 March 1793 in which the city of Cholet was captured by the Vendée insurgents.

Significance

The capture of Cholet on 15 March 1793 marked an early territorial gain for the Vendean insurgency under Cathelineau and Stofflet. Securing a city of Cholet's regional standing demonstrated that the uprising, drawing a force of some 15,000, could seize and hold urban centers against Republican forces. Republican casualties of between 100 and 300 underscored the effectiveness of the insurgent assault and signaled that the War in the Vendée would require a sustained military commitment from the Republic to suppress.
