Significance

The Battle of Bouin was fought on the island of Bouin during the War in the Vendée, pitting Republican forces of the Army of the West against Vendéan troops under François de Charette. The engagement resulted in Vendéan casualties estimated between 200 and 500, against a Vendéan force of roughly 1,500 facing a Republican contingent of around 2,000. The action formed part of the broader Republican effort in late 1793 to suppress the Catholic and Royal Armies and consolidate control over the coastal bocage and island territories of the Vendée.
