Significance

The Battle of Poljana, fought on 14–15 May 1945 near Prevalje in Yugoslavia, occurred six days after Germany's unconditional capitulation, making it one of the last armed confrontations of World War II in Europe. A column of approximately 30,000 Axis personnel — comprising German Wehrmacht units, the Croatian Armed Forces, the Montenegrin People's Army, the Serbian Volunteer Corps, the Slovene Home Guard, the 15th Waffen SS Cossack Cavalry Corps, and other collaborationist forces — was intercepted by the Yugoslav Army while attempting to reach Austria and surrender to British forces. The engagement resulted in relatively limited casualties on both sides, but its significance lies in the Yugoslav Army's effort to prevent Axis and collaborationist troops from escaping across the border and, by extension, potentially avoiding Yugoslav jurisdiction. The battle illustrates the contested transition from active hostilities to postwar reckoning, as belligerents on the losing side sought to surrender to Western Allied rather than Yugoslav authority in the immediate aftermath of the German defeat.
