Significance

The Eleventh Battle of the Isonzo, fought between 18 August and 12 September 1917, was one of the most costly engagements on the Italian Front during World War I. Italian forces under Cadorna and Capello committed substantially larger numbers than the Austro-Hungarian defenders under Boroević von Bojna and Arz von Straußenburg, yet the campaign produced casualties on a scale that strained both armies severely — Italy suffering around 158,000 and Austria-Hungary around 115,000. Coming late in the long series of Isonzo offensives, the battle represented a continued Italian effort to break through Austro-Hungarian lines despite diminishing returns and mounting attrition. The human cost accelerated the exhaustion of Italian offensive capacity and set conditions for the catastrophic Austro-German counteroffensive at Caporetto the following October, which shattered the Italian position on the front.
