Battle of Ngomano

Overview

The Battle of Ngomano or Negomano was fought between Germany and Portugal during the East African Campaign of World War I. A force of Germans and Askaris under Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck had recently won a costly victory against the British at the Battle of Mahiwa, in present-day Tanzania and ran very short of food and other supplies. As a consequence, the Germans invaded Portuguese East Africa to the south, both to supply themselves with captured Portuguese materiel and escape superior British forces to the north.

Significance

The Battle of Ngomano was fought during the East African Campaign of World War I, when Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck led a combined German and Askari force across the border into Portuguese East Africa. The move followed a costly engagement against the British at Mahiwa, after which Lettow-Vorbeck's force faced severe shortages of food and materiel. The invasion served a dual strategic purpose: resupplying from captured Portuguese stocks and evading the superior British forces pressing from the north. Portuguese casualties ranged from 227 to 550, reflecting the severity of the engagement against a defending force under João Teixeira Pinto. The battle effectively opened Portuguese East Africa as a new theater of operations for Lettow-Vorbeck, extending the East African campaign southward and prolonging German resistance in the region well into 1918.
