Significance
The Easter Offensive was a major conventional military campaign launched by the People's Army of Vietnam against South Vietnamese and U.S. forces, running from 30 March to 22 October 1972. Involving approximately 300,000 North Vietnamese troops against a South Vietnamese force of roughly 758,000, the offensive tested the viability of Vietnamization—the U.S. policy of transferring combat responsibility to South Vietnam. North Vietnamese casualties reached approximately 100,000 against South Vietnamese losses of around 10,000, suggesting the offensive was contained at considerable cost to Hanoi. The campaign spanned multiple corps zones, with command distributed across I, II, and III Corps on the South Vietnamese side and the B-5 Front on the North Vietnamese side. Known in South Vietnamese literature as the Fiery Red Summer, the offensive ultimately concluded in October 1972 without a decisive North Vietnamese breakthrough, though it demonstrated that Hanoi retained the capacity and will to conduct large-scale conventional operations even as U.S. ground forces were withdrawing from the conflict.
