Cambodian campaign

Overview

The Cambodian campaign was a series of military operations conducted in eastern Cambodia in mid-1970 by South Vietnam and the United States as an expansion of the Vietnam War and the Cambodian Civil War. Thirteen operations were conducted by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) between April 29 and July 22 and by U.S. forces between May 1 and June 30, 1970.

Significance

The Cambodian campaign extended the Vietnam War across an international border, marking a significant geographic and political escalation. Thirteen separate operations were conducted by ARVN forces between April 29 and July 22, and by U.S. forces between May 1 and June 30, 1970, targeting North Vietnamese positions in eastern Cambodia. The campaign intersected with the Cambodian Civil War, drawing that conflict further into the wider regional struggle. ARVN forces committed 58,608 troops against an estimated 40,000 North Vietnamese, inflicting 11,369 casualties at a cost of 3,009 of their own. The cross-border operations aimed to disrupt North Vietnamese logistics and base areas that had long been used to support operations inside South Vietnam, directly challenging the strategic infrastructure sustaining enemy forces in the southern theater.
