Dekemvriana

Overview

The Dekemvriana refers to a series of clashes fought during World War II in Athens from 3 December 1944 to 11 January 1945. The conflict was the culmination of months of tension between the left-wing EAM, some parts of its military arm, the ELAS, stationed in Athens, the KKE and the OPLA from one side and from the other side, the Greek Government, some parts of the Hellenic Royal Army, the Hellenic Gendarmerie, the Cities Police, the Organization X, among others and also the British Army.

Significance

The Dekemvriana marked the open military rupture between the Greek government-in-exile and its British backers on one side, and the left-wing resistance movement EAM and its associated forces on the other. Fought in Athens from December 1944 into January 1945, the clashes brought together a fractured array of armed actors—Greek government units, the Hellenic Gendarmerie, the Cities Police, and the paramilitary Organization X alongside British Army formations—against EAM, elements of ELAS, the KKE, and the OPLA. The presence of Winston Churchill among the senior figures aligned with the government side underscored the degree to which Britain treated the outcome in Athens as a strategic priority in postwar European order. With government forces numbering roughly 11,600 and EAM fielding approximately 17,800, the fighting produced around 3,200 combined casualties. The Dekemvriana represented the earliest armed phase of what would deepen into the Greek Civil War, establishing the fault lines—between the wartime resistance left and the returning monarchist government backed by Allied power—that would define Greek politics for years afterward.
