Chortkiv offensive

Overview

The Chortkiv offensive, also known as June Offensive, was a counteroffensive military operation of the Ukrainian Galician Army (UHA) against the Polish Army during the Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918–1919. Initially, the numerically inferior Ukrainian force achieved tactical success along the entire front, pushing back the French-supported Polish troops. However, the offensive failed to achieve strategic success due to lack of ammunition, and after a Polish counteroffensive the Galician Army was forced to retreat across the Zbruch river, leaving Galicia in Polish hands.

Significance

The Chortkiv offensive was the Ukrainian Galician Army's major counteroffensive effort during the Polish–Ukrainian War, pitting a force of roughly 19,000 against a Polish army nearly twice its size at 38,600. Despite this numerical disadvantage, the UHA initially achieved tactical success across the entire front, pushing back French-supported Polish troops. The offensive ultimately failed to convert these gains into strategic results, with ammunition shortages preventing the Ukrainian force from sustaining its momentum. A subsequent Polish counteroffensive forced the Galician Army to retreat across the Zbruch river. That withdrawal ended West Ukrainian military resistance in Galicia, leaving the region in Polish hands and effectively deciding the territorial outcome of the Polish–Ukrainian War in Poland's favor.
