Capture of Erivan

Overview

The capture of Erivan took place on 1 October 1827, during the Russo-Persian War of 1826–28. The city fell to the Russians after being besieged for a week and opened up the path for the eventual capture of Tabriz, the second largest city in Iran and an important trading post.

Significance

The capture of Erivan in October 1827 was a decisive moment in the Russo-Persian War of 1826–28. After a siege lasting approximately one week, Russian forces under Ivan Paskevich took the city, inflicting roughly 4,000 casualties on the Qajar Persian defenders commanded by Hossein Khan Sardar. The fall of Erivan directly opened the route toward Tabriz, the second largest city in Iran and a major commercial center. The sequential loss of these two strategic positions severely undermined Persia's ability to continue the war and set the conditions for the conflict's conclusion.
