Battle of Oshakan

The Battle of Oshakan was a battle that took place on 29 August 1827 during the Russo-Persian War (1826–1828) between the army of the heir to the Persian throne Abbas Mirza and the Russian detachment of Lieutenant General Afanasy Krasovsky.

Significance

The Battle of Oshakan brought a Russian detachment under Krasovsky into direct engagement with a Persian force under Abbas Mirza that outnumbered it by a ratio of roughly ten to one. Russian casualties of over 1,100 against a Persian force losing between 3,000 and 3,500 men indicate intense fighting despite the disparity in size. The engagement occurred during the Russo-Persian War of 1826–28, a conflict that ultimately ended with the Treaty of Turkmenchay and significant territorial concessions by Qajar Iran. A Russian force of fewer than 3,000 men sustaining heavy losses while inflicting comparable damage on a force of 30,000 reflects the operational pressures both sides faced in the Caucasus theater during the war's later stages.
