Berdiansk port attack

Significance

The Berdiansk port attack demonstrated Ukraine's capacity to strike Russian naval assets operating within occupied port infrastructure during the early weeks of the full-scale invasion. The sinking of the Alligator-class landing ship Saratov marked a significant material loss for the Russian Navy's Black Sea amphibious force, which had been using Berdiansk as a logistics and staging hub. A second landing ship sustained damage but was able to withdraw. The loss of an Alligator-class vessel reduced Russian amphibious lift capacity at a time when landing ships were playing an active role in the southern axis of the invasion.
