Battles of the Separation Corridor

Overview

The Battles of the Separation Corridor were a series of military engagements between the Israel Defense Forces and the Egyptian army in Operation Yoav, and were the centerpiece of the operation. They took place throughout all of Yoav, in the strip of land between the Israeli-held Negev enclave and the rest of the country. This area is generally called the Separation Strip in Hebrew.

Significance

The Battles of the Separation Corridor were the centerpiece of Operation Yoav during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, forming the core military effort of that operation. They were fought in the strip of land known in Hebrew as the Separation Strip, which lay between the Israeli-held Negev enclave and the rest of Israeli-controlled territory. Control of this corridor was operationally critical: it divided the Negev from the remainder of the country, and the engagements between the Israel Defense Forces and the Egyptian army in this zone were therefore central to determining whether the Negev could be linked to and integrated with Israeli-held territory elsewhere. As the defining series of engagements within Operation Yoav, their outcome bore directly on the broader strategic question of who would hold the Negev as the war continued.
