Battles of Kfar Darom

Significance

The Battles of Kfar Darom encompassed a series of engagements between the Haganah and Arab forces at the southern kibbutz of Kfar Darom across 1947–1948. The most significant of these occurred on May 13–15, 1948, when Palmach defenders held the kibbutz against repeated attacks by the Egyptian army, including Muslim Brotherhood units. The defense, mounted by approximately 30 Israelis, demonstrated that small isolated settlements in the southern front could resist conventional military forces during the critical opening phase of the war. The engagements at Kfar Darom reflected the broader pattern of contest over the Negev corridor, where the disposition of individual settlements carried strategic weight for both the nascent Israeli state and the Arab coalition's southern axis of advance.
