Battle of Zorndorf

Overview

The Battle of Zorndorf, during the Seven Years' War, was fought on 25 August 1758 between Russian troops commanded by Count William Fermor and a Prussian army commanded by King Frederick the Great. The battle was tactically inconclusive, with both armies holding their ground and claiming victory. The site of the battle was the Prussian village of Zorndorf. During the battle, Frederick famously took a regimental standard and led an attack himself, rallying his troops.

Significance

The Battle of Zorndorf, fought on 25 August 1758 near the Prussian village of Zorndorf, pitted Frederick II's army of 33,000–36,000 against a Russian force under Count William Fermor numbering between 42,590 and 52,000. Despite the numerical disparity favoring Russia, the engagement ended without a decisive result: both armies held their ground and both sides claimed victory. The human cost was severe on each side, with Prussian casualties reaching 11,390–12,800 and Russian losses estimated at 16,000–17,000, making it one of the bloodiest engagements of the Seven Years' War. The tactical inconclusive outcome was nonetheless strategically consequential for Frederick, who had been compelled to redirect forces to confront a Russian advance into Prussian territory, illustrating the mounting pressure of fighting on multiple fronts simultaneously. The battle checked Fermor's operation without eliminating the Russian threat, a pattern that would define Prussia's grinding attritional struggle against Russia throughout the war.
