The Battle of Lutterberg took place on 10 October 1758 during the Seven Years' War between a French force of 42,000 commanded by Charles, Prince of Soubise and a much smaller Anglo-German force commanded by General Christoph Ludwig von Oberg.

Significance

At Lutterberg on 10 October 1758, a Hanoverian force of 14,000 under Christoph von Oberg engaged a French army of 42,000 commanded by the Prince of Soubise. The disparity in force sizes — roughly three to one in France's favor — was reflected in the outcome: Hanoverian casualties reached 3,000 against an opponent more than twice that strength. The engagement formed part of the broader western German theater of the Seven Years' War, in which France sought to neutralize Hanover and relieve pressure on its Prussian opponents by forcing the Allied Army of Observation onto the defensive. A reverse of this scale would have constrained Hanoverian operational capacity in the campaign season and bore directly on the ability of Ferdinand of Brunswick's allied forces to hold the line against French penetration into northwestern Germany.
