Significance

The Battle of Zenta, fought on 11 September 1697 near Zenta in the Kingdom of Hungary, was a decisive engagement of the Great Turkish War and one of its most consequential Ottoman defeats. A Habsburg force of approximately 50,000, commanded by Eugene of Savoy on behalf of Leopold I, inflicted casualties estimated at 30,000 on an Ottoman army that may have numbered twice the size of the force opposing it, while sustaining fewer than 1,600 losses of its own. The disparity in casualties underscored the scale of the Ottoman collapse. As a climactic engagement of the Great Turkish War, Zenta effectively broke Ottoman military capacity to contest the conflict and contributed directly to the conditions that produced the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699, which ended the war and marked one of the most significant territorial retreats in Ottoman history in Europe. The battle confirmed Habsburg dominance in the middle Danube region and effectively ended meaningful Ottoman military presence in the Kingdom of Hungary.
