Battle context

The engagement at Los Yébenes pitted Colonel Jan Konopka's Regiment of Polish Lancers against multiple Spanish cavalry regiments near the village of Los Yébenes during the Peninsular War. The Polish regiment was heavily outnumbered by the Spanish force of approximately 5,000 and was surprised in the encounter, coming close to defeat. The action illustrates the persistent pressure Spanish forces were able to exert on Napoleonic detachments operating in the Iberian interior during the early phase of the Peninsular War, where isolated French-allied units remained vulnerable to numerically superior Spanish formations.
