Significance

The Battle of Wad-Ras was the concluding major engagement of the Hispano-Moroccan War, fought on March 23, 1860, under the command of Leopoldo O'Donnell. Together with the Battle of Castillejos and the capture of Tétouan, it completed Spain's military campaign in North Africa aimed at suppressing Riffian raids against Ceuta. Morocco sustained approximately 1,000 casualties in the engagement, facing a Spanish force of 37,000 against a Moroccan force of 40,000. As the final action of the war, Wad-Ras brought Spanish operations to a close and contributed to the conditions that ended the broader conflict over Ceuta's security.
