Battle of Vinh Yen

Battle context

The Battle of Vĩnh Yên, fought from 13 to 17 January 1951, marked a significant reversal in the First Indochina War. French Union forces under Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, numbering approximately 9,000, defeated a Việt Minh force of around 22,000 commanded by Võ Nguyên Giáp, inflicting an estimated 6,000 to 9,000 casualties on the communist side. The engagement arrested a string of Việt Minh battlefield successes and demonstrated that French Union forces, under aggressive leadership, could repulse large-scale Việt Minh conventional assaults. De Lattre's victory at Vĩnh Yên temporarily stabilized the French position in the Red River Delta and checked Giáp's attempt to shift the war toward conventional offensive operations.
