Battle context

The Battle of Treponti, also known as the Battle of Castenedolo, was an engagement during the Second Italian War of Independence in which Austrian forces under Karl von Urban defeated the Sardinian volunteers commanded by Giuseppe Garibaldi. With Austria fielding approximately 4,000 men against Garibaldi's 3,500, the outcome represented one of the rare reverses suffered by Garibaldi's forces in the 1859 campaign. Sardinian casualties stood at 117. The engagement was a localized Austrian success at a point when the broader war was trending against Austria, situating it as a tactical win within a campaign that Austria would ultimately lose.
