Battle of Tortuguero

Overview

The Battle of Tortuguero was the first naval battle of the Dominican War of Independence and was fought on 15 April 1844 at Tortuguero, Azua Province. A force of three Dominican schooners led by Commander Juan Bautista Cambiaso defeated a force of three vessels of the Haitian Navy. Though it was a minor naval battle engagement, it determined the naval supremacy of the Dominican Republic over Haiti until the end of the war.

Significance

The Battle of Tortuguero was the first naval engagement of the Dominican War of Independence, fought in April 1844 in Azua Province. Three Dominican schooners under Commander Juan Bautista Cambiaso defeated three Haitian naval vessels in what was a minor engagement by scale. Despite its limited size, the outcome carried lasting strategic weight: it established Dominican naval supremacy over Haiti and, according to the record, that supremacy held for the remainder of the war. By securing control of the sea early in the conflict, the Dominican Republic denied Haiti the ability to project naval power against its coastline or supply lines, removing an entire dimension of Haitian offensive capacity for the duration of the independence struggle.
