Battle of Santiago (1844)

Overview

The Battle of Santiago was the second major battle of the Dominican War of Independence and was fought on the 30 March 1844, at Santiago de los Caballeros, Santiago Province. Although outnumbered, Dominican troops, part of the Army of The North and led by General José María Imbert, defeated Haitian Army troops led by General Jean-Louis Pierrot.

Significance

The Battle of Santiago was the second major engagement of the Dominican War of Independence, fought less than a month after the republic's declaration. A Dominican force of approximately 2,900 troops under General José María Imbert met a Haitian army of roughly 10,000 under General Jean-Louis Pierrot at Santiago de los Caballeros. Despite being outnumbered by a ratio of more than three to one, the Dominican Army of the North defeated the Haitian force, inflicting around 600 casualties. The victory demonstrated that the newly declared republic could field an effective military defense against Haitian efforts to reassert control over the eastern portion of Hispaniola, reinforcing the viability of Dominican independence in the war's opening weeks.
