Overview

The Battle of Tolosa saw a British-Portuguese-Spanish column led by Thomas Graham attempt to cut off a retreating Franco-Italian force under Maximilien Sébastien Foy. Assisted by Antoine Louis Popon de Maucune's division, which fortuitously appeared, the French parried Graham's initial attacks then slipped away when threatened with envelopment. The town of Tolosa is located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of San Sebastián. The clash occurred during the Peninsular War, part of the wider Napoleonic Wars.

Significance

The Battle of Tolosa was a subsidiary engagement fought as the Allied forces under Wellington pressed northward following their decisive victory at Vitoria days earlier. Graham's column sought to intercept the retreating Franco-Italian force under Foy before it could reach the coast and the fortress of San Sebastián, approximately 20 kilometres to the north. The arrival of Maucune's division enabled the French to absorb Graham's initial attacks and then withdraw before encirclement could be completed. The French escape preserved a portion of their force intact, complicating the subsequent Allied siege operations around San Sebastián and leaving a defended anchor on the road toward the French frontier.

Tactics

Graham's column launched initial attacks against the Franco-Italian force under Foy holding Tolosa. The arrival of Maucune's division strengthened the French position sufficiently to parry those assaults. When Graham's force threatened to envelop the defenders, the French used the delay purchased by Maucune's timely intervention to withdraw before the encirclement closed.
