Battle of San Marcial

Overview

The Battle of San Marcial took place on 31 August 1813 near Irún, close to the Franco-Spanish border, as part of the Peninsular War. The Spanish Army of Galicia under Manuel Freire de Andrade repulsed a French attack led by Jean-de-Dieu Soult. The battle was named after the heights of San Marcial which were held by the Spanish.

Significance

The Battle of San Marcial, fought near Irún close to the Franco-Spanish border on 31 August 1813, saw the Spanish Army of Galicia under Manuel Freire de Andrade and Gabriel de Mendizábal repulse a French assault commanded by Jean-de-Dieu Soult. The Spanish force of 16,000 held against 18,000 French troops, inflicting roughly 4,000 French casualties while sustaining approximately 2,500 of their own. Coming in the latter stages of the Peninsular War, the successful defense demonstrated the Spanish army's growing capacity to contest French forces independently, without relying on British intervention. Control of the heights of San Marcial reinforced the Allied position along the Franco-Spanish frontier and added pressure on Soult's forces as the campaign moved toward the Pyrenees and ultimately into French territory.
