Battle of Thouars

Battle context

At Thouars on May 5, 1793, the Vendean Royalist forces under Lescure, Bonchamps, and La Rochejaquelein seized the town and compelled the Republican garrison under Quétineau to surrender. The Republican force of approximately 5,000 suffered around 3,000 casualties, a severe loss relative to their strength. The fall of Thouars represented a significant Royalist success in the early phase of the War in the Vendée, demonstrating the insurgency's capacity to capture defended towns and overwhelm regular Republican forces that were numerically inferior. The compelled surrender of Quétineau's command added to a pattern of Republican setbacks in the region during the spring of 1793, reinforcing the scale of the challenge the Republic faced in suppressing the uprising.
