Battle of the Pearl River Forts

Significance

The Battle of the Barrier Forts drew the United States Navy into a direct engagement in the Pearl River during the Second Opium War. American forces under Foote and Armstrong conducted an amphibious assault against four fortified positions known as the Barrier Forts near Canton, inflicting significant casualties on the Qing garrison of roughly 5,000.
