Battle of the Neches

Significance

The Battle of the Neches was the decisive engagement of the Cherokee War of 1838–1839, fought in what is now the Redland community over two days in July 1839. It arose directly from the Córdova Rebellion and from Texas President Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar's policy of removing the Cherokee from Texas. The Cherokee present had migrated from the American Southeast to avoid forced relocation to Indian Territory, yet faced the same pressure in their new homeland. The battle effectively ended organized Cherokee resistance within the Republic of Texas and fulfilled Lamar's removal objective, displacing a population that had sought refuge in Texas from earlier dispossession policies in the United States.
