Battle of Plum Creek

Significance

The Battle of Plum Creek was a direct consequence of the Great Raid of 1840, in which Buffalo Hump led a large Comanche war party deep into settled Texas. The engagement at Plum Creek occurred as that war party withdrew westward, intercepted by a combined force of Tonkawa allies, Republic of Texas militia, and Rangers under commanders including Mathew Caldwell, Edward Burleson, and Felix Huston. The battle represented the Republic of Texas's armed response to one of the most significant Comanche incursions into its settled territories, and its outcome shaped the ongoing contest over the frontier between Comanche-controlled lands and expanding Anglo-Texan settlement during the Texas–Indian Wars.
